Age verification is becoming increasingly common across online platforms, and Discord is the latest major service to introduce a mandatory system. Following similar measures already implemented by platforms like Roblox, Discord is preparing to roll out its own global age verification process starting in March.

The system is designed to ensure users are placed into appropriate age categories, but it also introduces new steps that will affect how people access certain content and features on the platform. Discord, widely used by gaming communities and social groups, is positioning this change as part of broader efforts to comply with global online safety regulations.

When the system goes live, users will be prompted with a pop-up asking them to verify their age. To begin, they will need to click a “Get Started” button, which launches the verification process. From there, users will be asked to submit either a selfie or a government-issued ID. In some cases, if the system cannot confidently estimate age using a selfie alone, both a selfie and an ID may be required.

According to Discord, all submitted images are deleted after the verification process is completed. Once the system processes the information, users will receive a direct message confirming whether they have been categorized as a teen or an adult.

Under the new framework, all accounts will initially be placed into a teen-by-default category. This means every user is automatically treated as a minor until their age is verified. Teen users will not need to go through the verification process unless they want access to adult-appropriate content or settings. Adults, however, must verify their age to unlock full platform functionality.

If users choose not to verify their age, their accounts will remain in the teen category. This comes with several restrictions. Sensitive content will be automatically blurred, and users will not be able to unblur it without completing verification. Access to age-restricted servers, channels, and commands will also be blocked.

Messaging features are also affected. Teen accounts will receive messages from unknown users in a separate inbox, reducing direct exposure to unsolicited contact. Additionally, users will receive warnings before accepting friend requests from people they may not know. Voice features are limited as well, with teen accounts unable to speak in stage channels.

The system also enforces strict compliance with legal age requirements. If a user is found to be below the minimum age required in their country—such as 13 in the United States—the account will be permanently banned. However, Discord has stated that users can appeal if they believe they were incorrectly classified.

This new verification model is already being tested in regions such as the United Kingdom and Australia, where local regulations require stricter age controls. A full global rollout is expected in early March.

As Discord expands its safety infrastructure, users continue to engage with its ecosystem, including premium features like Buy Discord Nitro Subscription, which enhance customization, communication, and overall user experience. At the same time, external platforms such as igxc.com highlight the growing digital economy connected to online gaming and community services.

Ultimately, Discord’s age verification system represents a significant shift in how online platforms manage user safety. While it introduces more steps for access, it is also designed to create a more controlled and age-appropriate environment for its global user base.
